When we think of those residing in or originating from Latin America or Spanish speaking countries we often hear the words Latino/a/x/e or Hispanic
But, these two terms have different meanings:
Latinx/o/a/e can be used to describe folks and culture of Latin American descent.
Hispanic refers to “Spanish-speaking” folks and countries.
There is erasure and violence that the term “Hispanic” produces. Because Hispanic is referring to “Spanish-speaking”, it erases Indigenous and African tongues that can be found in Latin America. That is why this year we are using the term Latinx instead of Hispanic in order to include the different identities that can be found within the Latinx diaspora.
